Nadu
Tanjore is the anglicised name of Thanjavur, is the 11th largest city in
Tamil Nadu, India. Thanjavur is one of the oldest cities in India and has a
long and varied history from the Cholas, the Pandhyas, Vijayanagar Empire,
the Madurai Nayaks, the Thanjavur Nayaks, the Thanjavur Marathas and the
British. It has been a part of Independent India since 1947.
Tamil is the most widely spoken language of this state. The standard dialect
is the Central Tamil dialect. Telugu, Thanjavur Marathi and also along with
Saurashtrians.
Thanjavur is an important center of south india art and architecture namely
the Great Living Chola Temples, an UNESCO World Heritage Monument are
located in an around Thanjavur.Also is Brihadeeswara Temple built by
Rajaraja Chola, is located in the center of the city. Thanjavur contains
over 90 temples
Thanjavur is located approximately in the centre of Tamil Nadu. The town is
located in the centre of the Cauvery delta. It is located about 320 kms from
state capital Chennai, and 56 kms from Tiruchirapall. Some of the nearby
towns are Kumbakonam, Pattukkottai, Mannargudi, Pudukkottai, Tiruvarur,
peravurani, Nagappattinam. The city lies on the Kaveri River basin, 200
miles south of Chennai.The Grand Anaicut Canal (Pudhaaru), Vadavaaru and
Vennaaru rivers flow through the town.
Thanjavur is also the home of the Tanjore painting, a painting style unique
to the region. The city is an important agricultural center located at the
heart of the region, known as the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu. South Zone
Culture Centre in Thanjavur is one of many regional cultural centres
established by Indian Government to preserve and promote traditional

Thanjavur is well-connected by roads and railways with other parts of India
and with cities and towns in Tamil Nadu. The nearest airport is
Tiruchirapalli located at a distance of 56 kilometres and the nearest
seaport in Nagapattinam which is 84 kilometres from Thanjavur.
Among the other historic buildings is the Vijayanagara fort, which contains
a palace that was expanded by the Maratha king Serfoji II with an armoury, a
Bell Tower and the Saraswathi Mahal Library, which contains over 30,000
Indian and European manuscripts written on palm leaf and paper. Also built
by Serfoji II is the Manora Fort, a monumental tower and The
Akshayapureeswarar Temple(Poosam star Temple),Vilangulam (Near by East Coast
Road) these are situated about 65 km away from Thanjavur. The then "Sangeetha
Mahal" has been converted to a handicrafts exhibition centre now which has
handicrafts from local artisans. Raja Rajan Manimandapam which is also one
among the tourist places in Thanjavur, Thanjavur is in the second place next
only to Chennai in attracting more tourists.
Thanjavur is one of the chief political, literary and religious centres of
southern India, known for its contribution to Carnatic music, it has
produced many classical musicians and Bharathanatyam dancers. It has become
the second most important site for the annual Natyanjali dance festival.
Tiruvaiyaru, which is close to Thanjavur, is the place where the great
musician Saint Tyagaraja lived. Here in Tiruvaiyaru every year in the Tamil
month of 'Thai' (second half of January) Thyagaraja Aradhana will be held
where musicians from all over the country will participate.
Tanjore is well known for bronze sculptures and its unique painting style
called Tanjore Painting, a percussion instrument called the Thavil, a divine
classical string instrument Veenai and the Bobblehead Thanjavur Dolls.

Economy
Thanjavur's economy is mainly agro-based. The city acts as a focal point for
food grains transported from the adjoining areas of the Cauvery Delta. The
city also has some medium and small-scale enterprises. Tourism constitutes a
major portion of the city's revenue.
Agriculture
Agriculture in Thanjavur is the main source of livelihood for most of the
people of Thanjavur. Cultivation has been the major occupation of the local
inhabitants of Thanjavur since the land is ideally suited for growing crops
like Rice.

20 Railway stations connecting Thanjavur to Major centres in the
state.Thanjavur is also reachable by train from other Indian cities. 'Thanjavur
Junction' is the station to alight. There are daily trains from/to Chennai,
Bangalore, Mysore, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur,
Tiruchirapalli, Salem, Karur, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Rameswaram, Dharmapuri
and weekly trains to Tiruchendur, Vijayawada, Vizianagaram, Nagpur, Jabalpur,
Allahabad, Varanasi, Bhubaneshwar and to all main cities.
